Few Hours with Nintendo Switch: My First Impression

Got a hands-on experience with Nintendo Switch
My friend Iman is kind enough to lend me his Nintendow Switch today, so I can play around with it, and see if this breakthrough device would be on my wishlist. Here are my first impressions, after playing with it for few hours today:

PRO:

  • The device is well built.  The Joycon (the controllers which can be detached from the main unit for two players game) are surprisingly playable. Tried to play FIFA 18 two player mode for few minutes. While we still need to learn how to pass and dribble the ball properly, but the great idea and concept is definitely can be executed. Would be a great buddy activity when you’re hanging out.
  • The screen is big and gorgeous. Colours look bright and pop. The resolution is sharp and it can rivals the at least Full HD graphic quality in console — at much smaller device of course.
  • The device does have strong processor. It can run games smoothly. ‘Zelda-Breath of the Wild’ looks absolutely amazing. FIFA 18 almost mimic its counterpart in PS4/XBOX, played really smooth and the control is responsive. Super Mario Kart and Odyssey render its colorful worlds and high paced actions flawlessly. Honestly, much better than I expected.

CONS:

  • I tried to play during traffic, when commuting to home. Playing Mario Kart for less than 30 minutes, my hand was cramped. The device is much bigger than smartphone, and considering the intense style of play Mario Kart is, perhaps I exerted my fingers and thumbs a bit too much. As result, I stopped playing with cramp.
  • Oh my poor old eyes. I wore my glasses first time because of playing my Sony PSP back then day in day out. As result I got this cylindrical eyes. When I played FIFA 18 and Mario Kart, honestly I couldn’t stand to be intensenly looking at the screen. And playing in moving car didn’t help either. I felt like throwing up. Sigh.
  • The current game catalog honestly is not really my cup of tea. Yes, Super Mario Odyssey is a perfect 10/10 in many gaming sites. And Zelda in this platform garnered many compliments and surely would win many accolades, but both are not my kind of game, apparently. I’m more to sports, first person shooter, or drivng games fan. And Switch currently don’t have many of these titles. So, aside of FIFA 18 and Mario Karts, I’m not sure I would like to spend my precious free time playing those games.

So there you go, my first impression of this magnificent device.  Yeah, obviously I haven’t explored much of the device and its features and functionalities, but honestly, judging from my experience so far and above reasons, I don’t think Nintendo Switch is for me. The mobile-desktop combo is cool idea, and I think Nintendo nailed it with Switch. But for now,  I would rather to properly sit on my couch, hold comfy DualShock controller and gaze into my big 4K TV to play proper games. Yea, something like GT Sports or Uncharted 4 🙂

Or it’s probably because I’m too old already.

As when I arrived at home and invited Rafif to try the Switch, he is really impressed with Switch and immediately roam the open world of Zelda.

Sigh. 10 years too late, you Switch!
