Having our plan cancelled the previous day due to bad weather and risk of avalanche, we’re so happy to be finally in Milford Sound.
But to get there, it’s not as straight forward as we planned.
Facing the risk of not being able to go to Milford Sound, we’re looking for alternatives. One of the alternatives is going to Doubtul Sound. A similar place to Milford Sound, albeit less popular, even it was much bigger.
To do that, we finally agreed to join local tour. Which will bring us to Milford Sound using a bus (instead of us driving the campervan ourselves). It’s a bit premium on our side, as we have to pay extra for the coach, although we already have our own transportation. But the tour gave us assurance that should the road to Milford Sound is still closed, they will divert our tour to Doubtful Sound. This is a win-win for us.

Luckily in the morning, we received information that the road was finally re-opened, and the tour will go ahead to Milford Sound. Yippie!
And actually, by joining the local tour, we also had few advantages. First, we can save our energy, as we don’t need to drive to Milford Sound, obviously. Second, the tour stopped in few locations (Mirror Lake, Fjordland Flatland, Hommer Tunnel), which were helpful for us to take pictures for memento. More over, the tour guide gave us quite interesting explanation along the way, so we know a bit more about New Zealand and its culture.
We’re so grateful we’re able to make a trip to Milford Sound.
The spot which is part of Fiordland National Park is so breathtaking. The cloudy and rainy weather made it more misty and mysterious. A visit which is worth the wait, definitely.
