My Best Round of the Year

My ball on Hole 16 – a short putt for birdie

I know my golf game is trending into right direction. But that was early in the year.

And then I changed my clubs.

I gave my old Yamaha clubs to my son, who starts to play golf again. I actually bought him iron set. Another Japanese iron sets, Fourteen, which I bought from my friend. But he found it too heavy for his liking. Hence I had to use them. But after I tried in few rounds, I also struggled in using the Fourteen. My golf game went awry again.

Until I changed the iron shafts and have it fitted in nearby golf store, which just opened in my neighborhood.

It works like a charm. Yesterday was the second time I used the clubs after I have it refitted. And I hit it solid most of the time.

And it’s not only my Iron play which looked great. My short game and my putting also contributed to my lowest score of the year. Maybe because I changed both of the equipment.

For the Fourteen irons, I changed to lighter shaft (NS Pro Zelos 80 gram) and fit them so it’s more stable. Whereas for my putter, I recently changed the grip to a newer Golf Pride oversized putting grip. Combined with the pendulum putting stance, using large muscles on the back instead of my hands, I made most of my putts inside 1,5 meters.

My tee offs, however, had a bit of funk. Especially when using the Driver. But to my surprise, during the round, I hit 3 great tee shots using 3W. And all of them in rather difficult holes.

Playing in Riverside golf clubs, there are number of holes which make you think strategically. You can’t just pull Driver out of your bag for your tee shots.

Take for example, Hole 6. It’s a rather short Par 4, with a right dog leg lay out. To get a chance to land the green in two, you have to hit your tee shots in 180-200 meter. And you have to hit it pretty straight. If you slice it (as I often do), then your second shot will be blocked with big, steep hill on the right which you can’t fly your ball over.

My Driver normally goes more than 200 meters. Hence, I have to choose between 3W and Hybrid. Had a bit of confidence in using 3W from my previous round in Halim, I tried it again. And boy, what a hit. I hit it flush and straight. Each is measured at 200 meter distance. Which helped me to score Par, Bogey and Birdie on the 3 holes I used the 3W. On the money!

Speaking on the money, following my great round, I also won big time against my buddies. In total I won 14 points – and leaving only 1 and 2 points to Agung and Anung. Sulis, the poor sod, had to pay all of us. Hahaha.

In terms of score, I posted my best round of the year: gross score of 80, which is +9 over in Par 71 course.

It was great fun, and really leading up to our upcoming golf trip in Bali by end of this month.

Me and the Gemblung Golfers. Won big today! Haha
